World Reading Challenge: Books Around The Globe 2019

I spent last year reading my way around the world, tackling my first world reading challenge and traveling the globe through literature. It expanded my horizons, exposing me to books I may never have found otherwise and motivated me to read more than ever before. Itย also exposed me to many new places (inspiring me to visit) and rekindled my love for others (leaving me with wanderlust for more). After an overwhelming response, many readers even joined me in this ambitious challenge too!

After such a positive experience, I’ve researched endlessly to compile a new world reading challenge so I can continue my travels through literature this year. This list includes 52 titles from around the globe – each set in a different country. The countries are random; but are all new from last year, include a mix across continents and cover those requested by you!

The books themselves are related to countries in a number of ways; they are either set there, have characters from there, reflect the culture or are by local authors. They include perspectives from natives, migrants, expatriates and visitors alike; as each have unique viewpoints.ย Many factors weigh into the selection process – popularity, awards, reviews and ratings; along with an aim for a diverse year of reading overall. 🙌

I hope youโ€™ll find something here to inspire your reading or travels, or perhaps even consider joining this world reading challenge yourself. Wishing you a wonderful year of adventures and stories ahead! 🌍

Albania:
Chronicle In Stone
byย Ismail Kadare, 1971

Masterful in its simplicity,ย Chronicle in Stoneย is a touching coming-of-age story and a testament to the perseverance of the human spirit. Surrounded by the magic of beautiful women and literature, a boy must endure the deprivations of war as he suffers the hardships of growing up. His sleepy country has just thrown off centuries of tyranny, but new waves of domination inundate his city. Through the boy’s eyes, we see the terrors of World War II as he witnesses fascist invasions, allied bombings, partisan infighting, and the many faces of human cruelty as well as the simple pleasures of life.

by Elfriede Jelinek, 1983

Please note: This book is a difficult read as it is dark, disturbing and rather uncomfortable. It includes themes such as self-harm, domestic violence and sexual dominance that I do not recommend for younger audiences.

The Piano Teacher,ย the most famous novel of Elfriede Jelinek, who was awarded the 2004 Nobel Prize in Literature, is a shocking, searing, aching portrait of a woman bound between a repressive society and her darkest desires.

Azerbaijan:
Ali and Nino
byย Kurban Said, 1937

Ali and Ninoย is Kurban Said’s masterpiece. It is a captivating novel as evocative of the exotic desert landscape as it is of the passion between two people pulled apart by culture, religion, and war.

It is the eve of World War I in Baku, Azerbaijan, a city on the edge of the Caspian Sea, poised precariously between east and west. Ali Khan Shirvanshir, a Muslim schoolboy from a proud, aristocratic family, has fallen in love with the beautiful and enigmatic Nino Kipiani, a Christian girl with distinctly European sensibilities. To be together they must overcome blood feud and scandal, attempt a daring horseback rescue, and travel from the bustling street of oil-boom Baku, through starkly beautiful deserts and remote mountain villages, to the opulent palace of Ali’s uncle in neighboring Persia.

Paris, 1490.ย  A shrewd French nobleman commissions six lavish tapestries celebrating his rising status at Court. He hires the charismatic, arrogant, sublimely talented Nicolas des Innocents to design them. Nicolas creates havoc among the women in the houseโ€”mother and daughter, servant, and lady-in-waitingโ€”before taking his designs north to the Brussels workshop where the tapestries are to be woven. There, master weaver Georges de la Chapelle risks everything he has to finish the tapestriesโ€”his finest, most intricate workโ€”on time for his exacting French client. The results change all their livesโ€”lives that have been captured in the tapestries, for those who know where to look.

An inventive, exuberant novel that takes us from the shimmering dunes of ancient Egypt to the war-torn streets of twenty-first-century Lebanon. Osamaโ€™s grandfather was a hakawati, or storyteller, and his bewitching storiesโ€”of his arrival in Lebanon, an orphan of the Turkish wars, and of how he earned the name al-Kharrat, the fibsterโ€”are interwoven with classic tales of the Middle East, stunningly reimagined.

In this brilliantly focused and haunting portrait of the people, the politics, the land, and the poetry of Nicaragua, Salman Rushdie brings to the forefront the palpable human facts of a country in the midst of a revolution. Rushdie went to Nicaragua in 1986, harboring no preconceptions of what he might find. What he discovered was overwhelming: a culture of heroes who had turned into inanimate objects and of politicians and warriors who were poets; a land of difficult, often beautiful contradictions. His perceptions always heightened by his special sensitivity to โ€œthe views from underneath,โ€ Rushdie reveals a land resounding with the clashes between history and morality, government and individuals.

When I Was Puerto Rican
byย Esmeralda Santiago,ย 1993

Esmeralda Santiago’s story begins in rural Puerto Rico, where her childhood was full of both tenderness and domestic strife, tropical sounds and sights as well as poverty. Growing up, she learned the proper way to eat a guava, the sound of tree frogs in the mango groves at night, the taste of the delectable sausage called morcilla, and the formula for ushering a dead baby’s soul to heaven. As she enters school we see the clash, both hilarious and fierce, of Puerto Rican and Yankee culture. When her mother, Mami, a force of nature, takes off to New York with her seven, soon to be eleven children, Esmeralda, the oldest, must learn new rules, a new language, and eventually take on a new identity.

The Appointment
byย Herta Mรผller, 1997

“I’ve been summoned. Thursday, ten sharp.” Thus begins one day in the life of a young clothing-factory worker during Ceaucescu’s totalitarian regime. She has been questioned before; this time, she believes, will be worse. Her crime? Sewing notes into the linings of men’s suits bound for Italy. “Marry me,” the notes say, with her name and address. Anything to get out of the country.

As she rides the tram to her interrogation, her thoughts stray to her friend Lilli, shot trying to flee to Hungary, to her grandparents, deported after her first husband informed on them, to Major Albu, her interrogator, who begins each session with a wet kiss on her fingers, and to Paul, her lover, her one source of trust, despite his constant drunkenness. In her distraction, she misses her stop to find herself on an unfamiliar street. And what she discovers there makes her fear of the appointment pale by comparison.

Nothing is missing in her carefully timetabled life of avoiding social interactions, where weekends are punctuated by frozen pizza, vodka, and phone chats with Mummy. All this means that Eleanor has become a creature of habit (to say the least) and a bit of a loner.

In the novel that won her the Booker Prize and established her international reputation, Anita Brookner finds a new vocabulary for framing the eternal question “Why love?” It tells the story of Edith Hope, who writes romance novels under a pseudonym. When her life begins to resemble the plots of her own novels, however, Edith flees to Switzerland, where the quiet luxury of the Hotel du Lac promises to restore her to her senses.

But instead of peace and rest, Edith finds herself sequestered at the hotel with an assortment of love’s casualties and exiles. She also attracts the attention of a worldly man determined to release her unused capacity for mischief and pleasure. Beautifully observed, witheringly funny,ย Hotel du Lacย is Brookner at her most stylish and potently subversive.

    1. Hi Sophie, thanks for your comment! Don’t worry, we didn’t miss Egypt – it was included in the first World Reading Challenge last year! Thanks so much for the great recommendation though, really hoping to put together an Egyptian reading list soon and will be sure to include it! ๐Ÿ™‚

  9. I am very happy to have seen this list but also very sad because you have left out Turkey. Through out history we have given the world amazing writers and poets. One of whom is a Nobel Prize winner, Orhan Pamuk.

Please include Turkey in this list, The Museum of Innocence by Orhan Pamuk is a very famous book which has its actual museum. The museum was elected “Museum of the Year in Europe” in 2014.

    Thank you!

    1. Hi Zeynep, thanks so much for your comment and suggestions. We didn’t miss Turkey at all, we only include 52 countries each year and Turkey was in the very first World Reading Challenge last year! I think you’ll be happy to find the title we selected for Turkey was by Orhan Pamuk too! I visited Istanbul last month and saw the Museum of Innocence, and wrote an article about Books Set In Turkey that accompanied me on my travels. Would love any recommendations you have for additions to the list! ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. I am unable to download the reading lists for the 2019/2020/2021 reading challenges! I subscribed (actually in 2018 and at that time I was able to download the 2018 list) but now it won’t let me download the other lists.

    1. Hi Pam, think we’ve discussed this on another posts comments! I’m afraid these haven’t been added to the resource library yet; it’s something I’ve been meaning to do for years. I’ve moved it up my to-do list and will hopefully get these done soon!
